The fifth manifestation of Devi Durga is known as Maa Skandamata. Maa Skandamata is Worshipped on the Fifth day of Navratri. Goddess is the mother of Kumar Skanda or shiva’s Son Kumar Kartikeya. Thus being the mother of Skanda she is Skandamata.
In her image she holds him(Her son Kumar Skand) in her lap. The image of Devi Skandamata portrays her having four arms, three eyes and a bright complexion, depicted seated on a lotus flower in her idol and therefore is called as Padamasani.
According to a tradition story a great demon named as Tarakasur asked Lord Brahma to shower his blessing to make him immortal. At this Brahma saying none can escape death. But Taraksur asked for the death by the son of lord Shiva because he thought Lord Shiva would never get married.
But when he got all blessing and power from Brahma he started to cause destruction on the earth. Then all Devatas requested Lord Shiva to get married. Lord Shiva agreed and married Goddess Parvati. In this way their child name Kartikeya or Skand Kumar, demolished Tarkasur. Devi Skandmata is a symbol of the mother-son relationship.
